I’m trying to install a Hive thermostat on my heating system, but I’m struggling to figure out the wiring. I’ve looked at the Hive wiring diagram, but it’s not clear to me how to connect it to my current setup.

My system has a combi boiler, and I’ve got wires labelled Live, Neutral, and what I think is the thermostat connection. Do I need to use all the terminals on the Hive receiver, or just some of them?

If anyone’s done this before or can explain the diagram in simpler terms, I’d really appreciate the help. Don’t want to mess it up and risk damaging the boiler!

wiring a Hive to a combi boiler’s not too bad once you break it down. The Hive wiring diagram can look a bit confusing, but here’s the gist:

  1. Live (L) and Neutral (N): These connect to the mains supply, usually straight from the boiler to the Hive receiver’s L and N terminals.
  2. Heating On (3): This is where you connect the wire from the boiler’s thermostat connection to tell it when to fire up the heating.
  3. Hot Water Terminals: Leave these empty since a combi boiler handles hot water itself.

I’d add some images to make it clearer, but I’m guessing this forum doesn’t support that

I’ve done plenty of Hive installs, and for a combi boiler, it’s pretty straightforward. Here’s how it goes:

  1. Live (L) and Neutral (N): Connect these from the boiler to the Hive receiver – no surprises there.
  2. Heating On (3): This is the key one. Wire the thermostat connection from your boiler to this terminal. That’s what tells the boiler to fire up.
  3. Hot Water Terminals: Leave them empty since your combi boiler doesn’t need them.

One thing to double-check – some boilers need a link between Live and Common (1) for the receiver to work properly. Check your boiler manual to be sure.

I can post some images to help explain this better after my third post – forum rules and all that.

Wiring a Hive thermostat to a combi boiler can seem tricky, but it’s pretty simple once you get going.
