Just startin’ out in carpentry and could use some advice. What are the best basic tools to get first? Don’t wanna go overboard, just need the essentials to get me goin’. Also, any tips for learnin’ how to measure and cut straight? Keep gettin’ it a bit wonky. Cheers
Good on ya for gettin’ into carpentry! Keep it simple to start, no need to buy the whole shop just yet. Here’s what I’d recommend, split up a bit for ya:
Hand Tools
1. Tape Measure – Get a good one, at least 5 meters. Always double-check your measurements – the old saying goes, ‘measure twice, cut once!’
2. Chisels – Handy for cleanin’ up joints or detailin’. Start with a basic set – 6mm, 12mm, and 20mm will cover most jobs.
3. Combination Square – This’ll help keep your lines square when marking cuts. Essential for neat work.
4. Handsaw – A good crosscut saw’ll get ya goin’ for most basic cuts. Later, you might add a finer saw for detail work.
5. Clamps – You’ll always need an extra hand, and clamps’ll hold things in place while you work. Get a couple, medium size should do.
Power Tools
1. Cordless Drill – You’ll use this for everything from screwin’ things together to drilling holes. Go for one with a bit of power – 18V or more.
2. Jigsaw – Great for curves and cuttin’ shapes. Doesn’t need to be top-of-the-line, just somethin’ reliable.
3. Circular Saw – For straight cuts on larger pieces of wood. Keep it steady, and always watch your line.
4. Orbital Sander – Smooths out rough edges in no time. Just make sure you got some spare sanding pads ready – they wear down quick.
Cheers
